Full Cast Crown
Full metal crowns cast from dental alloy — manufactured in Shenzhen, China
About Full Cast Crown
A full cast metal crown is a crown restoration made entirely from cast dental alloy — no porcelain is applied to the surface. The entire crown is metal, including the biting surface and all visible sides.
Full cast crowns are chosen when maximum strength and durability are the priority, and aesthetics are a secondary consideration. They are most commonly used on posterior teeth (molars) that are not visible when the patient smiles, or in cases where there is insufficient space for porcelain to be added.
Alloy Options
Non-Precious (Base Metal)
— cobalt chromium (CoCr) alloy. Most commonly used. High strength and hardness. Cost-effective. Silver in colour.
Semi-Precious
— silver and palladium alloy. Better biocompatibility. Suitable for patients with nickel or chromium sensitivities.
Precious (High Noble)
— gold alloy. Highest biocompatibility. Excellent marginal fit and adaptation. Gold in colour. Preferred in some markets and clinical situations.
Advantages
- High strength — cast metal is extremely resistant to fracture and wear
- Minimal tooth removal — full cast crowns require less tooth reduction than PFM or all-ceramic
- Excellent fit — metal casting adapts very closely to the prepared tooth
- Long lasting — cast metal crowns are highly durable in the posterior region
- Good protection — provides strong coverage for severely damaged or root-canal treated teeth
Disadvantages
- Not aesthetic — metal colour makes it unsuitable for visible anterior teeth
- Metal allergy risk — small risk for patients with known metal sensitivities (precious alloys reduce this)
Indications
- Posterior teeth (molars and premolars) with large structural defects
- Molar teeth after root canal treatment (RCT) requiring full coverage protection
- Cases with limited occlusal space where porcelain or ceramic cannot be added
- Weak posterior abutment teeth for removable partial dentures (RPD)
- Posterior retainer crowns for fixed partial dentures (FPD)
- Malpositioning or torsion of posterior teeth where full cast is indicated
- Patients with bruxism (heavy grinding) where ceramic may fracture

Frequently Asked Questions
Full cast crowns are not recommended for anterior teeth as they are entirely metal and will be visible when the patient speaks or smiles. They are best suited to posterior teeth (molars and premolars) that are not in the visible smile zone. For anterior teeth, consider PFM, Emax or zirconia instead.
Yes. Full cast crowns are an excellent choice for root canal treated (RCT) posterior teeth. They provide strong, full coverage protection for structurally compromised teeth, and the minimal tooth reduction required is an additional benefit where remaining tooth structure may be limited.
Yes. All dental alloys we use are FDA approved, CE certified and TGA approved as medical devices. Material documentation can be provided on request for your regulatory register.
Most full cast crown cases are completed within 6 working days from receipt. If you need urgent processing, please contact us before sending the case.
